Francis Beidler Forest A National Audubon Sanctuary We are located just a couple miles from this wonderful preserve. Beautiful swamp boardwalks with ancient trees, abundant flora and amazing wildlife. For more info visit http://beidlerforest.com/ . Forts Moultrie & Sumter Our state is known as the "Palmetto State". You will see this tree on our state flag and seal. During the Revolutionary War the British attacked Fort Moultrie guarding the city of Charleston. Due to the eminent arrival of the British soldiers they used the readily available Palmetto tree to construct Fort Moultrie's walls. When the canon on the British ships fired on the fort the balls simply sank into the pulpy wood or bounced off thereby saving the fort! The British were defeated and Charleston was saved! Due to this victory and the success of the Palmetto tree fort the tree became our state symbol. Fort Moultrie is now preserved and open to visitors. You might also like to visit Fort Sumter where the first shot of the War Between the States was fired. A visit includes a boat ride to reach the fort which is in Charleston Harbor.
